Connecting with your Neighbors, “When Neighbors Start Talking”

For years homeowners in neighborhoods have formed neighborhood watch groups, also called crime watch or neighborhood watch. Many communities have been left out of these programs but fear not there is another solution. Keeping your neighborhood safe and up to date on local happening, like crimes, lost pets, baby sitters and local businesses can be found on a great website called Nextdoor.com.

Nextdoor.com is a password protected website that can not be accessed by search engines and each member must validate their home address to be accepted, only local resident in the neighborhood program are accepted and your information is never shared with Third Parties.

Posting community events, street parties, school events, maps and more are just a few of the groups you can organize and help others to join on your street and neighborhood. Over 25,000 participants are using the apps and website and what a great way to share car break-ins, burglaries and with so many homeowners using video surveillance you might just find who robbed you or your neighbor by using Nextdoor.com.

they really need to improve things here to get you set up.  I can't get in as they have something all fouled up. I live in an apartment and someone else in my building signed up and I can't seem to put my apartment # in so now it thinks my phone doesn't match, etc.  Oh well.

Hi Scott - I checked out the website and my building(I live in a condo) showed up although I'm going to do more research before completing the information.  Thanks for the heads-up.

Really cool! Even though I would love to join an start a group for some of the neighborhoods we specialize in, I really like that you have to verify your address so that actual residents are the only members.

Good morning Bob,

Our neighborhood signed up for nextdoor canyon creek and we have the largest group in the city online interacting! It's a great group!Neighbors have sold things, traded handyman, plumber etc. names. They have found babysitters, talked about neighborhood events etc. It's a great way to stay connected and every community should form their own..it's worth the effort!!

Debbie Laity, I just heard about it and it actually helped a local catch some kids in the neighborhood stealing, most homes have cameras these days and with this website its better since you can share with your neighbors only.

Debbie Reynolds, it is sure to be a big hit with many neighborhoods, but there will be those who we not like it.

Gita, it is sure to be the next big deal?

David, very true and it is making it harder for thieves, I've see so many stealing from their neighbors and then when the video is showed or the neighbor next door saw who it was they return the goods.

Don, I totally agree we need to watch each others homes even if we don't like those neighbors it's good practice and peace of mind.

Bob - I set up our Nextdoor in a large part of our community (some of the neighborhoods were already established) and it has been really great!  People are reluctant to join at first, but once they do they really enjoy it.  It has been great for sending out reminders of community events, wild animal sightings (yes, we have some javelina, coyotes and bobcats that roam the neighborhood at times!), etc.  One thing to mention is Nextdoor does NOT permit business advertising, thus even if us Realtors have a listing in the neighborhood, we aren't supposed to advertise it.  That's a bit of a bummer, but other than that I have really enjoyed watching the participation grow over the past several months!

Posted by Greg Mona, Real Estate in the 21st Century! (Faira Homes Corp) almost 6 years ago

I started a NextDoor in my neighborhood, after a friend in Pittsburgh suggested it. It is really growing and we learn all kinds of things. Just now I read where the Animal Shelter reunited one of our neighbors with their lost dog. And another email today has a member looking for three of her childhood friends. It is neat.

We had a couple of naysayers who thought that the city was spying on us. I suppose they could, but total privacy is a thing of the past I do believe.

I'm curious what percentage of homes are signing up in your neighborhoods? I started one here in our active adult community of West Neck in Virginia Beach. About 900 homes +/- including two condo communities. I've got close to a third of my condo community on board and good participation in one of the single family sections with sporadic sign ups in the rest. 77 sign ups total. We have used our Watch Captains in each of our Villages to push it out to their respective residents.

Greg and Bob, the business advertising as I understand it, allows you to post your business if you live in the neighborhood but a local restaurant or other business not located in the neighborhood can't use it to advertise. As much as I would like to, I have refrained from doing so. Being the Founder I don't want people to think that's why I started it up.

Have any of you posted guidelines in addition to what is published by Next Door? If so I would appreciate you sending me a copy. This is something we have been wrestling with and has been a cause of some push back from a few residents. E-mail them to bruce@BruceSellsTheBeach.com. Your responses are greatly appreciated.

Bob, we have several websites that provide an opportunity to share information with neighbors. They are great ways to connect with homeowners!

Posted by Sharon Parisi, Dallas Homes (United Real Estate Dallas ) almost 6 years ago

How VERY ironic.  I live on a small private street of relatively new homes (6-7 years old).  My husband and I have discovered a water leak (among several other issues we have had)  and when we talk with our neighbors on our street, we realized several others have had the same or similar issues with their homes.

I had JUST emailed everyone on my street 3 days ago, to see if anyone would be interested in an HOA meeting after the 1st for the purpose of simply sitting down and discussing what issues we have or have had with our home, and our neighbor's homes, how they fixed it, etc.  Mostly so we could all share repair ideas, contractor/handyman info, and so we can possibly know what other issues to look for.

Anyway - this came through yesterday and I laughed!!  This is perfect.  I can't wait to start this up with nextdoor.com.  Thanks Bob!

Have a nice holiday everyone!!

My neighborhood wasn't in there before I read this post, but I just added it when I joined this morning!  Thanks so much for this- it looks like a great resource AND a good way to meet my neighbors since I just moved in a few months ago!

Howdy Y'all, glad everyone is finding this program helpful and I hope you find the answers your looking for through the website.

Bruce, It is only for resident homeowners since they must verify their address however you the members of your community can post for the vendors in your general area. I think testimonials from locals are powerful and help the locals out.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question, my suggestion is contact support and see if they can direct you to another source of Advertising and so what if all your neighbors think your the only one tooting your horn, that's what it's all about in my opinion.

We just started a Neighborhood Watch Program due to some issues we've had in recent months. Hated to do it after 33 years of never having had to lock our doors on our home or cars or lock our bicycles. Too bad, but this seems to be the real World nowadays. I'll look into this and pass it along to our Neighborhood Watch Chief.

BTW, here's a link to a post I just shared today [Crime free Neighborhood?. Looks like a lot of us are on the same page. I'm going to repost this if you don't mind. I think this is something everyone should know about.

Thanks

The very best protection is having everyone in the neighborhood paying attention to what is going on next door and across the street.  For too long, neighbors have opened their garage doors, driven in, closed the door and never paid much attention to who lives around them.  Now there seems to be a return to introducing yourself and making friends around you.
